One of the other sites in Paris I visited for the first time this year was the
Palais Garnier - the Opera of Paris. Already from the outside, the building is absolutely magnificent! And the inside, including the great staircase, opulent decorations and chandeliers are equally stunning. With 1,979 seats, the theatre space itself isn't that big actually - and the new opera built on the Place de la Bastille is much bigger with its 2,700 seats (
for comparison, La Scala in Milan has 2,800 seats).
The ceiling painting is done by Marc Chagall, and while very pretty, for me, it somehow doesn't really fit in. By the way, the famous Phantom of Opera story takes place at this opera house.
I don't know whether I was lucky, or whether the Opera (
from the inside) isn't that popular with tourists, but I didn't have to queue to get in. Tickets cost €10.00. It's worth checking the website to see whether anything is going on, as the main theatre might not be open to the public on some days.
Vielen Dank für diesen Tipp! Ich werde dieses Jahr wohl auch noch für ein paar Tage nach Paris fahren und muss mir so langsam mal überlegen, was ich alles ansehen will. Die Oper stand bisher noch nicht auf meinem Zettel. Das hat sich nun geändert :-)

ReplyDeleteNein, noch nie. Bin bisher immer nur durch Frankreich durchgefahren (Richtung Spanien). Ich hoffe ja nur, dass die Franzosen auch ohne Französisch verstehen. Mit englisch sollen die ja ein wenig "schwierig" sein ;-)
